Viewer Customizing Avatar

From RexWiki

Avatar Generator

The information on this page is specific to realXtend version 0.5. The avatar system is largely similar in the new Taiga/Naali architecture (http://wiki.realxtend.org/index.php/Main_Page), but this tutorial no longer applies.

Integrated Avatar Generator

Start the Avatar Generator in the viewer by selecting 'Avatar Generator' from the View menu. Your current avatar is automatically imported into the Generator and can be modified.

If you encounter problems while using the Avatar Generator in the viewer, or want to modify your avatar without starting the viewer, you can use the standalone version of the Avatar Generator.

Standalone Avatar Generator

You can also use a standalone version of the Avatar Generator outside of the viewer. A shortcut is created alongside the RealXtend Viewer shortcut.

  • Start the Avatar Generator either from the shortcut, or by navigating to folder
[realxtend]/avatar_generator/bin/

where [realxtend] is the folder where the RealXtend viewer was installed to. Double click on avatar_generator.exe to start the program.

Standalone Avatar Generator Options

Avatar Generator Options

When starting the standalone Avatar Generator, you will be presented with graphical options screen from which you must select proper graphical options.

  • First select Rendering Subsystem (first drop down box). Any will suffice, but generally Direct3D9 is safe option.
  • If you are unsure of the remaining options, you can use the default settings and just click OK.
  • If you want, you can change Video Mode to something other than the default. Recommended video mode is the same as the current video mode on your operating system.
  • Change other options as you feel necessary.

Changing basic appearance

  • Use the arrows next to the 'Model' box to change to a different 3D model of the avatar.
  • Use one of the menu options (Outfit, Skin, Animations, Appearance, Advanced) to select your edit mode.
    • Outfit is for 3D-clothes that are specifically placed over the avatars body
    • Skin is texture-based clothing, which are painted images drawn on the avatar skin
    • Animations and their speed can be selected from the list (if the avatar model has some options)
    • Appearance is for basic avatar mass, muscle and posture modifications that can be used to change the body shape
    • Advanced is for more detailed re-shaping either using morphing, or, editing the bone sizes. See the section Advanced menu for further instructions.

Outfit menu

  • Some of the realXtend avatars are equipped with a 3D clothing and hair collection
  • Select the part of the avatar you want to modify (Head: Hat, Hair, Accessories, or, Body: Top, Bottom, Accessories).
  • Use the arrows to cycle through the available options. If nothing is visible, the avatar base model may not have any ready made outfits.
  • In RealXtend hair and other avatar accessories are attachments. It means that these may be separate from the avatar's 3D model.
  • Notice: In realXtend Avatar Generator version 0.3, some of the clothes show the underlying avatar skin in certain places. These errors, however, do not occur inside the realXtend virtual worlds.

Skin menu

  • Use the arrows next to the 'Face skin' and 'Body skin' to change the avatar's skin and clothes.
  • Texture-based clothes are shared between all avatar base models, but they may not be aesthetically compatible between each other. For example, male clothes won't look right on female avatars and vice versa. Use discretion when selecting clothes, but feel free to experiment.

Animations menu

  • Select the appropriate basic animation for your avatar from the drop-down list under the "Walk animation:" heading.
  • Modify the movement speed using the slider.

Appearance menu

  • In "Body" tab: use the sliders to change the body mass, muscle mass and height of your avatar.
  • In "Posture" tab: use the sliders to change the curvature of your arms and legs, and to twist your spine backwards/forwards.

Advanced menu

You can use Undo to undo last change, or Reset to reset all changes you have made to the avatar in the Advanced menu.

Bones scale

  • Select the appropriate bone from the list.
  • Select the axis (x,y,z) you want to use for modifications.
  • Select the modification you want to do (rotate, scale, or translate).
  • Use the slider to increase/decrease the amount of modification.

Morph modifiers

  • Select the morph target you want to modify from the drop-down list.
  • Use the slider to apply changes.

Attachments (Attach and Remove)

  • To add an attachment, such as hair, first you must select which bone of the avatar the attachment is attached to. Choose the appropriate bone from the Bones scale drop-down list.
  • To add hair, select bone 'Bip01_Head' from the bones drop down box. select hair attachment from attachments drop down box (e.g., Female_hair_afro.xml) and click 'Attach!'
  • You can add as many attachments to a bone as you want. You can even add the same attachment several times, so be careful!
  • To remove an attachment, select the bone it's attached to, select the attachment from the drop down box and click 'Remove!'.
  • Some attachments may appear in the drop down box more than once. It means they can be attached to the same bone but appear in different locations, such as earrings attached to 'Bip01_Head' bone appearing on each ear.
  • Attachments may be added to specific bones only, e.g., different hairstyles can only be attached to 'Bip01_Head' bone.

Exporting avatar

  • Click the 'Export...' button to upload your avatar to an avatar storage server, or to save a local copy.
  • Type in your account and password to the export dialog and click Export. After the avatar is successfully exported, you can close the dialog. If you encounter an error, check the account text, server address and password, and try again.

Importing avatar

Importing avatars is only supported on the standalone version of the Avatar Generator. In the built-in Avatar Generator your current avatar is automatically imported into the Generator.

Only locally saved avatars can be imported. Whenever you export an avatar, a local copy is also created. If you create your avatar on one computer, it is not possible to import it on another computer.

  • Click the 'Import...' button to import locally saved avatar.
  • Type in your account and click Import.
